YAC  (Youth Action Council)

The Youth Action Council (YAC) was formed in 1998 and is the teen advisory sub-group of The Georgetown Project. YAC members are proactive and want to have a voice in the Georgetown community.  YAC has been instrumental in showing Georgetown the immense power of youth and that if given the opportunity, teens can make a positive and lasting impact on our community in very meaningful ways. The activities of YAC are youth-led with support from caring adults and staff of The Georgetown Project.   (Meetings are the third Tuesday of each month at 4 p.m. in GHS Library. )

YAC News:

We hope all of you will join us and get excited about becoming involved in activities this school year that connect youth to the Georgetown community.  We are of course planning youth service days on MLK, Jr. Day in January, and on Global Youth Service Day in April, but we need your input as to other issues and activities that are important to youth and we want to hear from you how The Georgetown Project can support your success in service and leadership.

Last year, Youth Action Council members engaged in over 3,000 hours of service to the Georgetown community.  As you all know, YAC members were active in the SARAH Project (Students Awareness Regarding Adolescent Homelessness) which increased awareness among teens about youth homelessness in Georgetown.  This youth driven effort inspired adult and teen leaders alike in our community to take action and begin planning ways to make a difference community wide.  YAC members helped to coordinate community wide service days, hosted prevention programs during Red Ribbon Week, and presented to parents during GISD Community Forums. YAC members have mentored younger students in our middle schools, inspiring service through the Agents of Change class in ASAP, and partnered with Southwestern University students in coordinated service projects.  YAC members also help families during the holidays with food, coats, or other basic needs.

So, whether your interests are to continue awareness with your peers around regarding youth homelessness, or to support the Big Give initiatives to provide food for the hungry, or to provide hands-on service to nonprofit organizations in Georgetown, or maybe talk about other areas that are important to you, The Georgetown Project welcomes your voice.

Carey Thornell and I will be involved with YAC again this year, however, your efforts have the support of the entire staff and board of directors of The Georgetown Project as well.  Ms. Thornell and I look forward to seeing you all next Tuesday, and please feel free to contact either of us if you need additional information.  Have a great weekend.
